Wikimedia Foundation
San Francisco, CA
Aeryn Palmer is Deputy General Counsel at the Wikimedia Foundation, the San Francisco-based organization that operates Wikipedia, one of the top ten most visited websites in the world, and several sibling projects also dedicated to enabling the sharing of, and access to, free knowledge. Aeryn leads a team of lawyers and legal professionals working on matters ranging from litigation to privacy to governance. They have particular expertise in data protection, risk management, and employment, having built the Foundation's compliance function from a single-person effort into a team. The development and orchestration of a holistic legal privacy strategy, considering not only the law and best practices, but also the strong privacy-protective values of the Wikimedia movement, has been one of Aeryn's most interesting tasks at the Foundation. Aeryn also manages the Foundation’s strategic litigation matters, provides advice on employment issues, and co-leads the team that produces the Foundation’s biannual transparency reports. A graduate of the University of Washington, Oxford University, and Yale Law School, Aeryn spends their spare time writing fiction, playing video games, and attempting to become a better photographer. Aeryn is a Fellow of the Civil Society Fellowship and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
